Gaya is the second largest city of Bihar, India and is also the headquarters of Gaya district. Gaya was recognized as a full district in 1865. In the year 1976, Gaya district was divided and two new districts – Aurangabad and Nawada were created.

Gaya is one of the important pilgrimage places of Bihar. This city is especially famous for Hindu pilgrims. The Vishnupad temple here is popular among tourists. According to the Puranas, this temple has been built on the footprints of Lord Vishnu.

Gaya is an ancient city with a Buddhist history dating back to the 6th century BC, when Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, 16 km (9.9 mi) from the modern city.

Significance of Gaya

Lakhs of people come to Gaya every year to perform Pind Daan of their ancestors. During Pitru Paksha, pilgrims from India and abroad come to Gayaji to offer Pind Daan and Tarpan. It is believed that by offering Pind Daan at Gayaji, 108 clans and 7 generations are saved and they directly attain salvation.
