Begusarai city is the administrative headquarters of Begusarai district, one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar state, India. In 1870 it was established as a sub-division of Munger district. It emerged as a district in 1972. There are total 18 blocks in Begusarai district. The district was named after a person "Begu" of this district who looked after an old and small market named "Sarai".

Begusarai is the birthplace of our national poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. The town hall of the city is known as Dinkar Kala Bhavan after his name.

What is famous in Begusarai?

It is home to Asia's largest oxbow lake, 'Kabar Lake', which is one of the major tourist attractions of the region. Many other historical, religious and natural sites like Jai Mangala Temple, Navlakha Temple, Simaria Ghat, Begusarai Museum, Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary and Chhaurahi Bakhadda etc. also attract visitors from far and wide.
