About Nalanda District

Nalanda was an acclaimed Mahavihara, a huge Buddhist monastery in the old kingdom of Magadha in India. From the fifth century CE to 1200 CE, the site was a hub of learning. The district is about 95 kilometers southeast of Patna, near the town of Bihar Sharif. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Current district of Nalanda with HQ Biharsharif was established on Nov 9, 1972. Prior it was Biharsharif sub-division of Patna District. Nalanda District, Biharsharif, Hilsa & Rajgir are 3 sub-divisions of Nalanda district.
