Sitamarhi is part of Tirhut Division. Currently, Sitamarhi consists of his three Sub-divisions and 17 blocks. Sitamarhi district was established on December 11, 1972 by separating it out from Muzaffarpur district. The headquarter of the district is located in Dumla, 5 km south of Sitamarhi. After the worst earthquake in history destroyed the town of Sitamarhi in January 1934, the district headquarters was moved here.
